Kevin demonstrates the method and reasoning of our AFO casting technique. We recommend that our CFAB customers use this casting technique for best results. -Kevin Matthews, CO/LO
Just wanted to say this was one of the best video's I've seen on casting/fabricating. I'll also say you have one heck of a good looking son as well with AWESOME looking feet!! I'll be looking for more recent video's seeing this one's 4+ years old almost and hope you use your son a lot more!! Now I know where you son get's his good looks... DAD!! lol ;O }
I tape my own ankles because I have CMT. It is difficult but I step lightly on the outside of the foot or I use a stick to push on the bottom of the foot as I tape. It is easier with a lace up ankle support. I stand on the foot as I lace it up. I'm still experimenting with this.
Transferring to PE is tough because it cooks at a lower temperature. We cook it at 350 and transfer, but they always come out lighter than normal. If the paper is sticking you're either getting it too hot or leaving the paper on too long.
The change is small. I prefer to cast in corrected alignment of the heel and forefoot. I correct dorsiflexion angle with the band saw. There is not a specific measurement I use for foot widening as it is minimal.
+Advanced Orthopedic Designs thank you for the reply. I really enjoy your videos and I find your explanations to be very informative. I especially like the videos explaining your tooling, fabrication setup, and techniques. Do you offer training courses or seminars of any kind?
+Mitch Sweeney Thank you. I do occasionally lecture at different state and national meetings, but not to often as it's kinda busy here. I will be discussing alternative designs at Canada's annual meeting in August, but nothing else on the schedule yet. I will make more videos when I find time.
I get them on ebay. They're made in Germany (Solingen preferably) and cost between $25 and $30. They last until you lose them. I've had one pair more than 2 or 3 years.
It may be difficult or uncomfortable for Patein even orthotist so better way to place flat board at plantar surface of foot to take shape and even maintain position of ankle in frontal and sagital plane.
You sound like the podiatrist I work for- it's all about the German steel! :) Great video on casting. Thank you!
Great video! Please...keep more coming! Would love to see a video on thermoplastic KAFO modification. Alignment gets so tricky with them.
I wished you worked where i work and we got casts as good as yours its a pleasure to watch someone doing the job right................Thanks
You could always ask your practitioners to watch.

Is a hard cast needed for plantar fasciitis?
thank you very helpfull and we want more
What type of material do you use to be the negative, is it some kind of plaster bandage or what is it called?
Hi Kevin. I was wondering how I can transfer a pattern onto polyethylene? I try but it seems the paper bonds to the plastic. Any pointers??
Great video. Can I know what type of POP bandage you use and where to get it? Thank you for your time
+saiful syazwan mohf fadzil We use Techform synthetic casting tape. It is sold by Ossur.
Tq for the info. :D
Thanks sir
thank you very helpful

There are about as many opinions as there are orthotists. This is what works for me.
I don't understand the question. I believe the video is self explanatory.
Yo aca en peru nesecito protesis derecho de la rodella abajo
Sorry, my spanish is not that good
good
Kevin, what plaster are you using to create your model? In one of the other videos I believe you stated it is mixed with perlite?
+Mitch Sweeney We mix our plaster with zonolite, aka vermiculite.

+Advanced Orthopedic Designs do you have a brand of plaster that you would recommend?
+Mitch Sweeney We use USG No.1, but that's what they sell here. We're not picky about the brand, just that it's not clumpy.
Where can I find you in American

Ever try a "lip knife" to cut your AFO's? they work great! OH! and no way to cut the patient even if you miss.

Hi
Wrong! The patient should be standing with weight on the foot when the shape is taken. Then the shape will be correct.
