As a teenager, I always thought it was too heavy.
Now it’s lighter than an M2- crazy!
Same weight as a M2. Both 3800lbs. I think the later model GTR's did increase in weight though but not by much
@@UnicornpirateI don’t know how they got the M2 to 3,800lbs. The M3 with Xdrive is 3,990lbs lol
@@GolfCoyoteModern safety features and technology. All modern cars suffer from it that's why they make it with 500hp to hide the weight. The new M5 weighs more than a H2 Hummer
I love the fact that Nissan conned everyone into believing it was a brand new car . The chassis is way older than 18 years old .
@@Lazerus2008They are doing that with the new Z now. Its not uncommon. Dodge has been doing it since the Charger came out in the early 2000s
This car lives long enough to see 3 generations of GTA 5
And it still died before GTA6
Really make you realise how old this car is
Nissan
Gta 5 wasn't released until 2013... this car was around when
Gta 4 was new in 08.
The GTR started production before GTA 4…
I always perceived these as supercars.. It's not the same to see any random sportscar like an M3 and this. Feels much more exclusive and "super" than regular sportscars regardless of price.
Totally agree with you!
100% The development/technology and way they were built alone puts them in that category.
I've heard argued that cars like Turbo S, ZR1, and R35 are put in a special hybrid category called "super-sportscar" because their model lines start out as a typical sportscar that then is suped-up to meet supercar criteria, like 200+ mph topspeed, supercar pricing, exclusivity, and exotic build
It was and still is. Nissan elevated the R35 GTR to true supercar performance (lots of advanced tech in a roadcar for the time) but with user-friendly/daily driving potential.
Bucket List Achieved 🍾. I was able to drive a GTR in Japan last October and it was awesome. Stressful as it was my first time driving in a rhd car on the left side of the road on some very narrow Japanese roads, but the stress was released thru laughing and a mile wide smile! We even took it to Tsukuba to watch a lapping day. Dream realized. If only I could afford one….
GT-R is 18 years old... During that time I just entered my second year of high school, graduated, entered uni, spent 6 years before graduating, found my first job, entered uni again for masters degree, spent 4 years with part-time job and COVID before graduating, lost my job, found a job, lost it again, suffer from mental breakdowns, and now on my new job(s). Porsche went through 5 generations of 911.
Meanwhile the GT-R remains GT-R.
I wish I was a GT-R.
Also, yes you should get one. Especially an unmodified ones. I had experienced the later 2020 GT-R Recaro Edition. Completely unmodified. It's savagely fast. Like, absolutely devastating. A 458 will never see which way the GT-R went on corner exit. But what shocked me is that it is genuinely comfortable and not harsh. I already liked GT-R quite a bit back then. After that, I really want one.
Maybe modify it juuuust a litte, Put some TE37's on it!
Can I ask what you were studying for?
3 generations of 911.
@@dutoitm1 I counted the .2 as new-ish gen, hence 5 generations haha
Aerospace engineering, with specialisation in computational fluid dynamics and aerodynamics. My undergrad thesis was on the design of high-lift devices for low-subsonic UAV, whilst my masters thesis was on design optimisation for swimfins. Basically looking at fishes and dolphins to design efficient swimfins for freedivers.
When this first came out, they said it was like a laptop on wheels. Now, it is one of the most analog sports cars out there.
Completely correct!
Comment of the day👍
No. The criticism was due to all of its assists. The car doesnt transmit anything. It is not analog at all. Its an auto with a very intrusive traction and stability control. The AWD system corrects any loss of traction so you barely have to do anything. The steering is extremely numb even though its hydraulic. You cant feel the car's rotation, its very heavy, visibility is bad,... Its still an amazing performer for its money, but the criticism still stands. Like its original designer said, it was a car made for a grandma to confidently drive it at 300kph.
@@AI-qd4vb hence the comment from streamingvideos 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Lotus guys laughing at the OP comment.
kudos to Dean for keeping a classy car orginal
Lame , everything about it is meh, having an unmodified car is great for driving the shit out of it for years but when you dont even drive it all that much it becomes being held for thr next owner that will ramp on it and thr next owner that will absolutely send it and in the long run this car will be at that point what its ment to be and that's Not Stock 😊
@@christopherdaniel2747 this makes no sense.
@christopherdaniel2747 what a terrible take.
I'm going to look at a GT-R tomorrow, you couldn't have timed this video better!
Yeah me too, my neighbour has one
Paul -Walker- Keatley in a GT-R, let's go! 🥳🎉
Incredibly fast.
Hope you respect it and dont play it off as just a quick Nissan
Ive had my GTR since 2013, not once have i considered getting rid of it. My other cars come and go but Godzilla will always have a home.
Enjoy it. I own one and love ❤ it.
@@danielshinerock1526 You too mate 👍
I’ve had one since 2013 too. Don’t know what I’d swap it for without spending double at least!
@@markkendall6854 Exactly! It does everything i want, anything else would cost twice, maybe three times as much!
@@psychotictactoe how many miles does it have on it? Is it reliable? How is it to live with daily?
I was one of the first people to own a R35 in the UK. I ordered it from Nissan in Cambridge. I still have the GTR crash helmet with my name on it when they took me to the Nürburgring. Absolutely epic car, however for us first owners Nissan were really restrictive on how you could use it.
Bought a 2008 GTR end of last year. I sometimes think.... its a lot of money to spend on a car that gets driven on weekends..... then i drive it and its worth every cent.
I own one. I agree with you. Enjoy it!
7.07 on the Nurburgring for the Nismo and 7.22 for the standard model. It is not slow. Absolutely right!
Those are also very old tests, over 10 years old in fact. Put better tyres in those cars and they would significantly better than an already very decent time.
@@matteo964 Tyres point is right but there is also some lingering scepticism in the community here that either of those cars were in a stock spec.
I rented 19 of my "dream cars" on Turo to experience them and sure enough, the R35 was the best one. I will own one someday, and hopefully keep it forever.

In that order. They were all great. I loved the i8 and GT-R the most.. also the rs5.. m5 was nuts. Model S Plaid was so fast, so ridiculous that I no longer care about experiencing a fast car, I'm done. I went 152 with it, and that only took 10 seconds to accomplish. They are BRUTAL.
we need the list!!
Back in about 2007 I spotted one of these (a grey import I am guessing as they weren't out in the uk yet). I was in an Elise. He turned right and i did the same. By the time i got the wheet straight, he was almost at the end of the road. I literally had not a cat in hells chance of keeping up.
Let us understand the fact that The Godzilla became a sort of 911 for Nissan, Became a Nice Platform to Slowly but wisely upgraded.
Jay, I never comment on YT videos, but you've made me. The production quality, and your passion, is exceptional. As to why Amazon hasn't given you your own show yet is beyond me. You are amongst the greats-Tiff, Clarkson etc. Brilliant! (XR2 owner)
Too kind
First time I ever went properly ‘fast’ was in one of these. I’d done a few ‘run wot ya brung’ track days and Santa Pods in my Clio 182 and CTR Ep3 so I thought I knew what I was doing but the supercar experience I did at silverstone was 10 laps of absolute pant shitting. Didn’t look at the PlayStation telemetry once.
Just flying past lambos and Ferraris with the track guide shouting ‘DONT BRAKE! YOU CAN NAIL ALL OF THEM IN EVERY CORNER!’
I did something similar at Silverstone in an Aston (in heavy rain) and yep the only car to pass me was a GTR (the GTR chap was embarrassing people, he was ridiculously quick!)!
Rumour has it that the first to go bonkers on price is the full JDM Japanese specification model with the R35 VIN as opposed to the 17 digit US and European spec models. Low mileage and rare colours will be the first to appreciate. Great video on an iconic car. It was never designed to be pretty, it was designed to be Japanese, in other words, functional.
A fair and honest review of the car which I really enjoyed 🙏
Picked up my 2024 in July last year. Best purchase ever!
which bayside blue?
@JuanLopez-oz9kh 2024 Jet Black Peral Premium
Nice Jeezie-San
He is reading our minds!!! Some of our pockets are just not there yet 😂
Needs to drop another 5-7.5k realistically
I have owned a 2016 R35 for 4 years! It has been good so far maintenance wise. I love the look of it and the handling as well the way it feels on the road. Very planted. I recommend you buy one! You will not regret it! .❤.
I loved my R35 basically flawless and one of the most reliable sports cars I owned. So true about the analog feel, people just wished it was a manual and put that playstation moniker cause of the dual clutch.
This is high praise indeed for what is a groundbreaking car not just for Japan but globally. It would be hard to choose between this and an R32 (it was released when I was a teenager and gained its moniker by dominating touring car racing here in Australia), but the R35 was a greater engineering achievement. Glad someone put its size and heft into context as it’s par for the course these days. Prices are insane for later model examples but nice low km models like the one you drove are obtainable. Bravo!
Got to be a 35. Ive had a few 32s and a 33. They feel like 7 or 8 grand cars. These look and feel like really special cars.
8:38 Anyone who tried to navigate the menus in Gran Turismo knows that Polyphony Digital should never be allowed near any UI
If Nissan ownership gave a fraction of the workmanship that goes in to GTR to the rest of the lineup. LOL 😂
Most important sports car of my generation.
Agreed. (claps while wiping away tears)
It's wierd how they were £50k brand new and now a 2009 with 30k miles is...£50k lol
There's a blue one local to me with a Y pipe and it sounds phenomenal.
Thanks. I like your candid reviews, and have always been interested in hearing about an unmodified GT-R.
This, and nothing else, will always be my dream car.
Hey Jay I'm a longtime subscriber and I can't afford these type of cars but if I had a chance to buy a sports car I can honestly say this is the car I would have.. awesome video as usual.. and hello from across the pond in Philadelphia PA
Ever since I played Need for Speed Underground I've lusted after GT-R's. Hopefully, someday, I'll be able to buy one.
This, and the original NSX are legendary Japanese machines, and will be talked about for decades to come.
Great Video, I had a 2009 White GTR and loved it, had to sell it to upgrade the house but would love another one.
Great video. My heart bleeds; I had my deposit down for an early example back in 2009. A black Premium Edition just like the one you're driving. I still love them, have been on track with modified version but admire that this car has been left unfettered. Perfect. I dropped out of taking delivery because of the financial crisis affecting my business. Regretted ever since, jeeez...☹
That and the Viper are probably the only cars I've lusted after.
Nice to see an original one. I paid a visit to Middlehurst about 30 years ago, when I was looking to buy a 300ZX, they had a great selection of GTR's. I still love the look of the R33 though. I went to a drag racing day at Elvington and a friend who owned a tuning company had his R32 beat a brand new R34 Nurburgring Edition's time - you should have seen his face! 😂.
I bought one new in 2011.The best car I ever owned.I traded it for a DB9.Two very different cars but both alot of fun.
I own a 2016 R35. Brillant car! Endless smiles and enjoyment!
If you want something depreciated, you should get a Giulia Quadrifoglio. Early models can be had in the 30's now.
Its just as fast as the early R35s (7:32 NRING), arguably better looking, more analog as its pure RWD/less technowizardry, easier to maintain(ZF8 vs the dual clutch, no awd diff, tires), easier to drive around town (ZF8), more comfortable in its softest settings, more practical with 4 doors, AND you can probably take it to a concours afterwards..you're getting a ton for your money!
I remember reading about the release of the GTR in the topgear magazine and at the time nissan said it was 'untuneable' and they thought it was meant to bait people into trying to tune it lol
also I remember the topgear japan GTR vs shinkansen race when it aired
Legendary
It had an immediate effect on Porsche and Ferrari
I had a tuned r33 GT-R for 5 years and now a stage one 2013 r35. Rb was rev happy but this engine is a beast. Thanks to 3.8 liter V6 its ready to go on every rpm. Make rb26 look very lazy and laggy. Just buy and install bonnet cancelars when buying one. Otherwise if you hit a bird or a rabbit, it can be a very pricey repair.
I'm really eyeing up one of these as a replacement for my W204 C63. The lack of depreciation is so annoying, I remember looking at them back in 2016 where the earlier examples were around the £30-35k mark and now they seem to have increase to £35-40k 9 years later. At least they're probably a nice place to park some cash that isn't a Porsche 911.
Bought an early car from my local main dealer in 2014 for £35k and sold it a year later for £35k, probably still worth the same money today. Broke the gearbox whilst at the Nurburgring and limped it home. Thank goodness for the warranty, Nissan dealer showed me the invoice for the gearbox from Nissan, was £17k just for the box plus the £4k they charged to fit it and took 7 weeks to get the gearbox off the production line in Japan.
Not my sort of car but must admit the style has aged really well over the years 👍👍
Always loved these! thoroughly enjoyed that.
I've had my 2009 GTR Stage 5 for over 4 years now, 800bhp and it has been a joy to own. Faster than cars 5 times the price and very reliable. Not one issue with it. Vboxed 60-100 time of 2.54 seconds takes some beating. Friends F8 Trib is 2.90.
Bond analogy was class . As a young man I can/have ,quite recently started appreciate how things are aging . The good . The bad . And the ugly ahaha
I remember seeing pictures of the truck that had two test mules in the back. I especially remember all the rumours, and the shock when we all found out it wasn't going to be sold as a Skyline anymore. Then Nissan said the ECU was 'impossible to tweak' which resulted in Endless-R doing it a month later or something. Polyphony Digital being announced as the ones who designed the UI for the in-car entertainment right around the time that they dropped Gran Turismo 5 Prologue with this on its front cover. Nothing, I repeat, nothing was as hyped and as lusted after at the time. It was like Japan's second era of performance cars - we still had the Evo and Impreza, Mazda was still making the RX8, Honda was still making the S2000, Civic Type-R and original NSX with the new one on the way. That 7m36s nurburgring time as well!
Iv only ever driven a 2019 GTR and as you do , I launched it ….. which did actually hurt my neck . Fantastic car , just a real shame the interior feels like an after thought when compared to something from Germany .Best thing about the r35 was how much it suddenly kicked Porsche up the backside .
Yes even from its initial launch the interior was hard to accept compared to my M6 I had at the time. Only reason why that I haven’t bought one - but still admire them also after having a R33 many years before.
I remember coming back from
the Lake District in my Alfa 156 Sportwagon V6 and saw my first R35 GTR. It was early 2009, so probably an import? It was black, it was menacing and created a shockwave of air when it went past me. I was cruising at a reasonable speed, so goodness knows how fast it was going?! I’ve wanted one ever since, but ended up with a R33 Skyline GTR V-spec instead, due to price. The only thing I would say was disappointing was that it lost the Skyline name. I’m assuming it was a marketing thing, as there was a Skyline model already being sold?
I’ve got an r33gtr also, best one of them all in my opinion. Although my engine is modified massively and scares/brings a smile to my face whenever I use it.
Only thing I don’t like is it’s too loud and I’ve spent too much money trying to tame the noise.
More integrity than marketing, they don't share the body shell anymore, and in Europe previous generations were already named GT-R for short
They wanted a stand alone GTR performance car. Nissan was selling the Skyline G35 as a sort of premium sporty car even though the Nissan Z is still selling.
Andy Middlehurst used to pass me regularly when I lived in St Helens on our local bypass, I'd recognise the headlight layout thundering up behind me, move over and the GTR would pass at a rude pace ... Flames issuing forth from the exhaust on gear change..., spectacular...
Great review. I always wondered about these cars as there are oh so many compilation videos of overconfident gtr drivers wiping out. Looks like I missed the boat on these.
What a cool car! I think the amount of near 1000BHP GTR's you see at Santa Pod take away how good these cars were as standard. I hope Nissan bring out a new model. Most cars now days are so boring, we need exciting cars!
Great video! would love to own one of these in the future, would be awesome for road trips through some amazing roads, :)
Big band funk for Godzilla. Great choice. Is the R35 the Grand Funk Railroad of sportscars. Big, brash, talented and impossible to ignore. Nice.
Wonderful review, as always! Thanks Jay and Dean for his glorious GT-R!
I miss mine, 2009 that I upgraded to an alpha 9 and it was scary fast. So much fun, I thought prices were going to fall but they seem to be holding strong here in Canada
One car of mine I miss. Of my R8, Lambo, and my new C8 Z06, I truly miss my 2011 GTR. I modified it to FBO and E85. It was at 800 HP and it was so much fun!!! Amazing car!!!
16 years and 14000 miles. I couldn't do that. I like driving too much. But different strokes for different folks, and good job Dean for looking after it.
I drove one on track in Las Vegas and absolutely loved it 👌
I was at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show and cannot beleive that was 18 years ago. Still want one of these but the running costs...
Are surprisingly low if you aren’t running crazy horsepower. Biggest regular consumable are the fluids which can be bought fairly cheap if you avoid the dealerships and learn how to do it yourself. I daily mine.
While the interior was cheap, it still felt right when I sat in one. They do have a large amount of criticism that I'm not going to deny as valid, but I will say, driving one completely changed my mind and really did elevate it over all other cars I've driven.
You should be very happy with your intro. Well done.
Agreed 👏👏👏
I was looking on the online market for these today funny that. A legendary sports car not just stock standard but the mods and potential it has no ceiling.
I remember leaving primary school, and on my final day there was a new generation (at the time) R35 GTR, in that nice orange colour, in the car park.
The owner, who I think was the uncle of someone at my school, let me sit in it. It would of been absolutely brand new at the time, as this was in 2017.
There were a lot of R35s at my primary school for some reason.
Some group who did these 3D printing demonstrations (when this was a new technology) the guy doing it shown me his pre facelift R35. Another group came in for an assembly, not sure what for as it was a while ago, who also had a pre facelift R35.
Very iconic childhood car for me, along with the Huracan.
However, I don’t think I’d buy one even if I had the money. It’s a one trick pony for me, it’s all about the 0-60 and if that’s important for you then just get an electric car.
I’d rather an i8 convertible, as weird as that sounds.
If there is one thing Japan does as good if not better than anyone else, it's designing, engineering and assembling automobiles.
I'm looking at one as a daily.
Surpisingly it won't cost any more to run than my 2500 Cummins.
guy bought a supercar killer car, kept it for 18 years, put only 14000 miles on, and haven't even polished the paint once. I don't know whats more sad.
I think your comment probably is
If this boils your blood, i know someone who had an F40 and daily drove it, covered in mud, scratches and god knows what...he just enjoyed the car as it should be!
@ It's up to the owners to enjoy their cars how they want to. So both are right and @SatongiFilms is just jealous
@@joeunderwood3693 What a dumb comment. Whats with this obsession of calling every criticism jealousy, lol? I also find it a pitty and a waste of resources, to buy such a car, barely use it and not even properly maintain it. I mean lol, if your just gonna garage queen it, have it look pretty... Theres an entire spectrum of emotions outside of jealousy that includes deception, sadness, etc. Its usually projection when people try to pin someones feels onto others personal beliefs. Is your life so filled with jealousy?
@@psychotictactoe Buddy, nobody says you should not drive your cars. The idea is to properly maintain it, and not just mechanically. A muddied scratched car is not "enjoyed". PPF it. Clean it. Keep it in top shape for as long as possible. Especially if that car is a fkin sports car or a multi-million piece of history and art like the F40, lol. Its like buying a Dali and keeping it dusty or allowing to oxidize.
Very nice, appreciate your honesty.......keep it up
I don't know Dean but think he may be a legend.
Stateside they get 2000hp plus wheel horsepower for the drag non road car R35 which does the quarter mile in 6.5. About $ 175000 spent to get it to that stage!
Drag races are like a circus performer with one trick. Nice for the first time but quickly become boring and predictible.
$175000 and no cornering, no braking, no high speed stability, no choosing a line for fast entry and exit. Just booom I can launch off a line 🤣
It floats their boat. They want to set a record and they have money to burn. Personally it is not my cup of tea.
Yes drag racing is a bit of a one trick. It's not an easy trick to do though. Now explain how the new M5 is different.
GTR R35 was designed to be a handling car! The Drag thing was not what Nissan made it for!
Will always love these
The one to buy is the R32, the first of the RB26 powered versions. It was the lightest, fastest, raw and took very little to make track ready. The R32's Attesa E-TS system was very powerful and unlike later models it could bias 100% of the drive to the rear wheels if needed. Though never acknowledged, the core is a 16bit processor built to Nissans design by Fujitsu.
Mental they could make this, then decide to make the Puke and Cumquat.
Cum-quat🤣🤣🤣
And put a guaranteed to break CVT in everything.
The duality of Nissan 😔
Those are Renault cars :)
Hey, the success of those cars provides Nissan with the cashflow necessary to design, develop and build special cars like the GT-R. So let's not be too harsh 😊.
2:02 - an Infinity assembly line as well.
Better know as an overpriced Nissan.
Skyline V35
Id have one next to an R33 and an R34 as a GTR trilogy. Perfect three car garage
On the track I have had passengers use barf bags …learned the hard way that it was a good idea to have them in car at all time
Kudos for keeping it stock.
Godzilla 👍
JDM legend 🥇
R35🫡
Godzilla is still a dream car for me..... and it has aged incredibly well.
Fantastic review bro
Jay, you really should have put the suspension in R, the way the car feels and steers really does change, it feels much more accurate at the front, like you can point it anywhere.
I too have a 2009 black edition also unmodified, I've had it since 2018 and I'm in the same boat, I just can't part with it.
But I can't stress enough that you're leaving performance on the table if you don't put all 3 switches into R.
Keep up the great content.
I own a R35 2016. As you say The 3 Rs transform the car in every way especially the handling!
I'm happy to sacrifice a potential bit of turn in for a more compliant ride - on our roads it means you can carry more speed
Hi Jay, A hockey fan? I am impressed. The Knight's are good choice.
If you buy one. Get a 2012. The early models had problems with the transmission & something else i can't remember off hand
You're obviously an expert.
Test drove one a few years ago as a potential rs4 replacement took me barely ten minutes to decide it was a great track car but had one of the worst rides posible for daily driving
I have a 2014 black edition and a 2017 track edition…the intention was for race track use only….unfortunately the track imposed a 92 decibel limit so cannot use the 2014 edition anymore, I modified it to 722 hp …the 2017 track edition is stock with aero, brakes, heat management and weight reduction modes…it does well compared to other models and brands….even though price is less than many others in my club you aren’t an underdog in a GTR …
Brilliant video James! I have just 1 request though, I've noticed you wearing stuff from American sports teams in a couple of videos. I don't know if you already have an NBA team, but if you don't you need to buy in on the Houston Rockets. They've got an exciting young team which is already coming to fruition, and they're just about to go on their first Postseason venture. You seem like one of the more open minded Brits, so I'm hopeful you open your mind to them or NBA in general🙏🙏
Still looks better than most Porsche, McLaren, Ferrari and Lamborghini sportscars. The longer GT fastback lines have aged well.
😂
“Still looks better” 😵💫🤣🤣🤣 give your head a wobble you absolute 🤡 & book yourself in spec savers
It is impressive machine but cmon it looks terrible😀
Maybe terrible is a strong word but is far from beautiful 😀
You have a rather weird taste to say the least, which is allright tho...
From interior view, cybertruck window! 😂😅
Still a revelation. At the turn of the century I had the Skyline R34 ( again imported by Middlehursts in Merseyside ) and missed out on this when we moved to Paris in 2002, and the R34 wasn't road legal there at the time. When the GTR came out in 2009 I'd move to Luxembourg and these things started appearing all over the place, in a city that's full of Porsches, Ferraris and R8's. We now had 3 kids and I couldn't justify the cost and the waiting list. I regret it. Might be time to do something about it since I got divorced.....
Shocked at this result. As you said at the end, I believed they were just a Playstation on wheels with zero engagement. Maybe I should consider one.
I remember the first time seeing one of these, don't know if it was modified but I could feel the ground vibrating before it came round the corner and I've loved them ever since. Now that I'm in a position to buy one I can't help but feel it looks really dated compared to the European alternatives.
2:13 this is the most attention from girls your car will ever get
It really isn’t buddy.
It's a glorified Japanese muscle car, not a "supercar slayer". Being a proper sports car means lap times which measure all-around performance, not just straight line performance times.
My poster car, before I turn 35 I'm going to have one! Cheers From Brazil!
I always feel that Nissan GT-R in stock is just never enough. You have to give it some tuning to get the more out of the engine.
Thanks @jayemm . Been looking at 2012 and up, stock models. Even more convinced to go grab a good example now.
Criminal sin was not givin it a stickshift aswell as the paddleshift. They done only the paddle shift...
5-7 years ago was the time to buy... 😭
I had a 60,000 mile 2010 Black edition, it had been modified by Litchfield to stage 4.5. And to be honest I did not keep the car long at all, it had super car like running costs and to me it just was not special enough to justify the run cost. It was great car, but for me it was a "never meet your heroes moment" glad I had one though, even though not for long.
