One has to use common sense and its not like its all fabrication, Jade flat out tells the MC, that her husband cheated on her with Cathy and says she smelled her perfum and saw her lipstick color on him. Then we see a drunk Cathy stating "You hate me." and Jade forgiving her, so its not a stretch to assume that its related.
If that's what happened ? We dont know, and maybe like you said we never will, but that's what we got so far.

Admitting he slept with 3 students ruins his and his wife's career, so he has all the reasons in the world to scream "No" right there...and yet he doesnt.Because he still cheated on her and Jade is mad as hell at him. Jade would not believe Stephen's NO at this moment because she has already implied it to Stephen in her anger.
The best thing Stephen could do was to keep quiet to defuse the heated situation. After all, Jade threatened Stephen to leave.

But what could have an impact or add stress is the fact that it would not only ruin their careers, but that he did it with his very own daughters sorority. Like I can see how that would give him pause and make him scared to death to answer in the affirmative, because thats obviously a whole different level of fucked up.
