Early Genesis was amazing. The performances and songs were so theatrical. It was like watching a rock version of opera. Peter Gabriel knew how to put on a show as the frontman, even a little later when he started wearing costumes and theatrical makeup. They also gelled because the others in the band played the music while staying low-key so they didn’t distract from Peter. They let their musical talent speak for itself, and they let the music enhance Peter’s performance.

Hackett is undoubtably majestic here and he still performs it exceptionally live. But what those performances do lack most notably are Collins and Rutherford, who are exceptional on this track. Anyone who knows anything about guitar would rate Hackett. Collins is also rightly highly regarded as a drummer. Rutherford and Banks are probably the most underrated on their respective instruments. The former is mesmerising in the peroration of Salmacis.

This particular filmed performance was the one that got me into Gabriel Era Genesis...transmitted on Scottish Television at 2.30a.m, circa 1984, and recorded straight onto V.H.S, and watched every School Lunch hour. Made my own Bootleg Cassette with a photocopied cover of a shot from this Belgian TV Show. Later the Van Der Graaf Generator one...oh yes, mini~Prog~revival~ The Halcyion days of my youth, Marillion Gigs at the Glasgow Barrowlands Ballroom( no really, don't scoff, punchy live Band in thier hay day). So long ago. Still my favourite Genesis stuff, well, this and the undesputed masterpiece that was "The Lamb lies down on Broadway".📽🎭🎤🎶🥁🎶🎹🎶🎸🎵🎶🌻💜

I don't know what is more of a mystery. That, 5 such talented musicians got together in the first place, or how they all stayed in one room together for as long as they did. One ego is hard enough 2 all but fatal, but 5 is just bound to explode and sooner rather than later. All I can think of is that's Banks had such a Super-Ego that he managed to keep the others in line just long enough to produce half a dozen albums. Therefore we must thank Tony Banks for something at least.

It sounds bit like an urban legend that Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins were in the same band with Phil focused on drumming (+ backing vocals and lead vocals on very few tracks)
What a miracle it was that after Peter's leaving the band, Phil took the lead vocal and the band and he himself as a solo enjoyed a enormous success!
